Malaria

Understanding Malaria
What is Malaria? Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions.

Symptoms:

  • High fever
  • Shaking chills
  • Profuse sweating
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Severe cases can lead to jaundice, seizures, coma, or death.

Causes: Malaria is caused by a microscopic parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito.

Prevention:

  • Use insect repellent
  • Sleep under insecticide-treated bed nets
  • Wear protective clothing
  • Take antimalarial medications when traveling to high-risk areas.

Impact: Malaria is a major public health issue, especially in the African Region, where it causes a high number of deaths, particularly among children under 5 years old. Each year, nearly 290 million people are infected with malaria, and over 400,000 people die from the disease.
