Understanding Malaria
What is Malaria? Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes
It is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions.
Symptoms:
- High fever
- Shaking chills
- Profuse sweating
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Muscle pain
- Fatigue
- Severe cases can lead to jaundice, seizures, coma, or death.
Causes: Malaria is caused by a microscopic parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito.
Prevention:
- Use insect repellent
- Sleep under insecticide-treated bed nets
- Wear protective clothing
- Take antimalarial medications when traveling to high-risk areas.
Impact: Malaria is a major public health issue, especially in the African Region, where it causes a high number of deaths, particularly among children under 5 years old. Each year, nearly 290 million people are infected with malaria, and over 400,000 people die from the disease.
